UWM Foundation President David Gilbert to Retire After Two Decades of Leadership

Gilbert leaves a legacy of innovation and impact

Milwaukee, WI – The UWM Foundation announces the retirement of President David Gilbert, effective July 1, 2025. Gilbert’s retirement marks the culmination of a remarkable 20-year tenure during which he has significantly advanced the foundation’s mission of supporting the university’s students, faculty, and programs.

Since 2005, Gilbert has driven a culture of philanthropy and community engagement that has fueled the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s rise as a leading public urban research university. Under his leadership, the foundation has achieved record-breaking fundraising, expanded scholarships, and forged strategic partnerships that have amplified the university’s local and global impact. He spearheaded efforts that enabled the foundation to distribute over $300 million to UWM for student, faculty, staff, and community initiatives. He also established the UWM Research Foundation to commercialize faculty research, the UWM Real Estate Foundation to develop student housing and research facilities without state taxpayer support, and strengthened ties with the Alumni Association.

“Dave Gilbert’s leadership has been nothing short of transformative for the UWM Foundation and the entire university community,” said Matt Rinka, Chair of the UWM Foundation Board. “His vision, dedication, and ability to inspire others to invest in UWM’s future have set a remarkable standard of excellence. We are deeply grateful for his contributions, and his legacy will continue to shape UWM for years to come.”
